Olga Loza, an international student at York College, has been awarded the Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation Psychology prize this year. The prize is presented in memory of former York College student, Caroline Stuttle, who was murdered during her gap year in Australia (2002). Caroline’s mother Marjorie Marks-Stuttle, and her son Richard, who set up the charity ‘Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation’ to promote safety awareness for young travellers, visited the College to present 18 year old Olga with a certificate and a book token.
Olga is Latvian and lives in the Ukraine, she came to York College two years ago to study an astounding six A Level subjects: Psychology, English Literature, French, Spanish, Maths and Further Maths, and she has been offered a place to study a psychology degree at St Andrews University. Psychology tutor, Peter Fenton has been impressed with her aptitude to the subject. He says: “Olga is one of the best students I have ever taught. Her commitment and attention to her studies is only surpassed by the natural skill with which she tackles any task she is given. For a student who has English as a second language, her writing is consistently faultless, and regularly she produces work of a standard that surpasses the level expected at A Level. She is a polite and enthusiastic student who has demonstrated a passion for Psychology and I have no doubt that she will do very well in anything she puts her mind to in the future. She has been a pleasure to teach and is a very worthy winner of this award.“
Olga is delighted to be this year’s prize winner, she says: ”I am very surprised and excited to be selected for this award. I feel very proud and I also have a sense of responsibility in accepting it. I came to the UK to get a better education and I have very much enjoyed studying at York College. The tutors have been so supportive and friendly. I have lived with a host family in York which has been very good. In the future I would like to work in clinical psychology and use my skills to help people. I am looking forward to studying the subject at degree level at St Andrews University in September.”
Marjorie Marks-Stuttle said: “Just like Olga, my daughter had a love of psychology. I am pleased to be able to present this award on behalf of Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation, which in some small way will enable Olga to pursue a degree in the subject.”Back to News Stories listing
