Staff and students at York College have congratulated Dr Alison Birkinshaw who has been awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Further Education.
Alison became Principal of York College in January 2008 and has worked in further education for 28 years. She joined Nelson and Colne College in 1984 and progressed to Section Leader in Music and Head of Creative Arts before moving to Runshaw College, Leyland, as Assistant, then Deputy Principal. In 2004 she returned to Nelson and Colne as Principal and the College was judged 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in 2005, becoming a Beacon College in 2006. Alison also chairs the National FE Reputation Strategy Group and is a member of a number of AoC Quality and Skills Committees.
She said: 'Receiving recognition of this sort is a terrific honour and privilege. I have worked in colleges since 1984 and consider myself extremely lucky to have been able to learn from and work with inspirational students and colleagues. I know that the staff who work in Further Education are extremely committed to ensuring that their students succeed as well as they possibly can, and each member of staff will have changed the lives of hundreds of people, of all ages. I am particularly lucky to be principal of York College where I can see very high quality education and training taking place every day and know what a difference this makes. My work with the Further Education Reputation Group has also allowed me to raise the awareness of ministers and other influential people of the value of Further Education, at a national level. I count myself very fortunate to have a job I love, and to work with inspirational colleagues to make sure students have the very best education possible. To be awarded an OBE is the icing on the cake!'Back to News Stories listing
