Media and Fashion students from York College were honoured to meet the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and their granddaughter Princess Beatrice during their Easter visit to the city.
The Queen was visiting York during her Diamond Jubilee year celebrations to hand out Maundy money at York Minster. As part of the visit, the Royal party enjoyed looking around '1212: The Making of the City' exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum. The exhibition marks the 800th anniversary of York's self-governance, telling the story of medieval York and celebrating the people, places and events that have contributed to the city's heritage.
York College Creative Media (Film and Television) students, Mickey McCulloch-Holmes and Faith Sharrock watched proudly as the film they helped to create was shown as part of the exhibition. The film entitled 'The Medieval City' was made as part of the Precious Cargo project with the Yorkshire Museum Trust, Digifish Media Productions and York College media students. Mickey and Faith were chosen to meet the Royal party to talk about their involvement in the high quality contemporary film about York's medieval heritage.
Said Mickey: “It was awesome to meet the Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Beatrice. I felt really proud to represent York College as a film maker on this really impressive project.”
Similarly, two BA (Hons) Fashion Design students, Jenny Ronald and Louise Abel, were honoured to meet the Royal party and talk to them about their work on the Precious Cargo Fashion project, displayed as part of the exhibition. Inspired by Medieval objects and stories, York's medieval history and heritage as well as contemporary fashion trends, their fashion designs are to be worn and will be shown as part of a catwalk show at the Yorkshire Museum in June.
Said Fashion student Jenny Ronald: “It was fantastic to see our work on display for the Royal visit. Meeting the Royal party was just amazing and I think they were intrigued by our designs.”
Principal Alison Birkinshaw, accompanied the four York College students on the Royal visit. She said: “It was a wonderful occasion and I was very proud of our students and their work. We have really benefitted from our partnership with the Yorkshire Museum and the staff there have been fantastic in supporting and working with our students. The Precious Cargo Project has presented a great opportunity for our students and the Royal party were really interested to know more about the making of the film and the fashion designs.”Back to News Stories listing
