Brickwork apprentices, stonemasonry and brickwork tutors from York College's construction department have created new village signs as part of the Wallingfen Way Project. Cskills Apprentices Sam Atton from Gem Construction and Sean McClure from H.L Halders Ltd spent two days building the signs to improve the identity of the village of Newport.
The Wallingfen Way Project aims to remove ‘a scar on the landscape (the B1230) and replace it with a coherent boulevard known as Wallingfen Way, a distinct rural community corridor which reinforces the distinctive character and identity of three Howdenshire villages, Gilberdyke, Newport and North Cave.
Said Gordon Shields, project leader for the Wallingfen Way Project: “The brick and stone signs are brilliant, just right for the old industrial village of Newport. We are so pleased with the students work and thank York College for helping us to reclaim the road for the local community.
Harpal Sambhi, Construction tutor at York College commented: “York College is pleased to support Newport Parish Council in this important community project. The students enjoyed themselves and the exercise provided a valuable learning opportunity for them.”Back to News Stories listing
