Headlines in the media these days never seem to be good news. With the possible exception of the European banking crisis, one of the most dismal headlines of the past year has to have been the government's decision to introduce higher fees from 2012/13 to study higher education at a university or college.
However, behind the doom and gloom there is some good news. Many people don't realise that as well as being the largest provider of A Level and Vocational courses in York and North Yorkshire,York College also has a great reputation for Higher Education. To ensure the financial barrier to enter higher education is reduced York College is charging £6,000 per year in 2012/13, that's a full £3,000 per year less than many universities and colleges.
In fact the College has more than 50 higher education courses to offer in subjects as diverse as Environmental Science, Graphic Design, Holistic and Spa Treatments, Media Make-up and Business Management. With highly trained and industry-experienced tutors, a higher than average level of contact time with students, dedicated facilities for higher education students and great pass rates at degree level, it is no surprise that the College will be introducing several new courses this year.
Mike Saunders, Head of Studies for Lifelong Learning and HE, explains why students should consider York College alongside the bigger universities: “York College offers students a different sort of HE experience from the Universities. We can offer students a high level of contact with teacher trained, vocationally qualified, experienced staff and we know that this allows students to achieve well. In July 2011, 32 per cent of our BA students gained a first class honours degree, and 22 per cent of our foundation degree students achieved a Distinction.
In addition, we offer value for money for studying higher education at the College, especially for students who study part time. They will only pay £3,000 per year for three years to achieve a Foundation degree, or four years to achieve a BA. Part-time study is clearly beneficial to those students who wish to ‘learn and earn'.
On the National Student Survey, the College achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 81 per cent which is above average for Colleges offering HE. We are committed to improving our offer to HE students and are responding to their suggestions for improvements.Back to News Stories listing
