York College News Stories

Mother and daughter graduate together

Mother and daughter, Caroline and Lauren Stott, graduated together at the York College Graduation Ceremony.

Mum, Caroline (aged 51) works at the Old School House Day Nursery, Sancton.  She has studied  part-time for four years; three years on the Foundation Degree in Early Years and for the last year on the top up to BA (Hons) in Educational Leadership –Childrens Workforce.

Lauren (aged 20) started at York College studying the National Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science and for the last year two years she has studied the Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy.

Says Lauren: “I have absolutely loved my time at college and I don’t really want it to end.  Having my Mum at college has been fine, we have even met up during the odd coffee break which has been a bonus for me.  We have studied alongside each other at home and my Dad has had to put up with our stresses and strains, but we have made it through together.  We have critiqued our work and given each other advice and guidance which has been lovely.  My Mum has watched me go through the different stages of my education and it has been great for me to see her come back into education, progress and enjoy studying.  She has made new friends and her confidence has grown.”

Says Caroline: “I am so proud of Lauren and what she has achieved.  Studying at this level has been tough but having her around, being so committed to her studies, has really helped me and we have spurred each other on, sharing information and being supportive of each other.  I am also grateful to my employer for being so accommodating and supportive of my studies.”

In September Lauren will progress to York St John University to take the top-up year of her Sports Therapy degree and then she hopes to take a masters degree at Exeter University.  Whereas Caroline will carry on to complete her studies with an Early Years Professional Status pathway at Hull University then she will be a fully qualified Early Years Lead Professional.
