Agreeing
to Learn
In this time of retail
uncertainty, job losses,
lack of confidence and
job security, here is
a real success story:
After four years of working
together York College
and USDAW signed a learning
agreement, to consolidate
and acknowledge a working
partnership.
York College and USDAW
(Unions of Shop, Distributors
and Allied Workers) have
been working together
closely in and around
the York area with a
range retail outlets.
The training started
with Tesco, then Morrisons
and is now being expanded
to Boots the Co-op and
many more national, regional
and local companies.
Says Julie Ainsworth,
(opposite) Skills for
Life Workplace Development
tutor at York college:
“Two of the most popular
courses are based on
maths and English. These
courses are delivered
in an enjoyable way and
their popularity just
keeps on growing. One
reason for the demand
is because each person
has their own Learning
Plan. The learning is
tailored at the right
level and pace for each
individual and linking
the courses with computers
also helps. Everyone
who aimed for a qualification
last year was successful;
achievement was 100%.
We’re expecting the same
result rate again this
year.”
Tracy White, USDAW Union
Learning Rep, is delighted
with the way the courses
have been adapted to
suit USDAW and other
members of staff. “Most
of the courses include
computers, and the fact
that people are enjoying
achieving nationally
recognised qualifications
in English and maths
is fantastic. Some of
the quotes from the ‘students’
say it all: “I never
thought I could do maths;
now I can and I’ve got
a qualification to prove
it”, “This course that
has been great and has
given me the confidence
to send emails to anyone.”,
“In some ways doing the
course has opened up
a whole new world to
me.”
