World-class tutors at York College win double Gold at WorldSkills 2011

WorldSkills training managers Mike Burdett (bricklaying tutor at York College) and
Kevin Calpin (former Stonemasonry tutor at
York College) have returned triumphant from WorldSkills 2011.

Both their competitors; Philip Green (brickwork) and Chris Berridge (stonemasonry) have won gold medals and were officially crowned the best in the world at the glittering WorldSkills 2011 awards ceremony at London’s O2 Arena.

Even though both trainees originate from other colleges, York College is proud to attribute their mentoring/ training to the exceptional skills passed on by York College tutors - their success is absolutely outstanding!

College tutors Mike and Kevin possess
‘world-class’ teaching skills and their involvement in this competition brings rewards for
York College construction students.  Over the past few months many construction students have had the opportunity to observe the competitors as they prepared for the competition.  In addition, York College organised a trip for Construction and Engineering students to attend WorldSkills 2011, which was a wonderful experience for students and staff.

Mike Burdett, York College bricklaying tutor, says: "Being involved in the WorldSkills competition allowed me to work with exceptional individuals at the peak of their craft.  The competition showcases the highest quality skills in an international arena and celebrates real talent.  I would advise any student to aim for WorldSkills. It develops the individual’s whole personality, allowing competitors to grow into successful people who then affect others positively. Competitors possess a drive and motivation to excel, they have a willingness to undertake anything that is thrown at them.  The confidence individuals gain is so positive and it raises industry standards. Being a WorldSkills trainer means that I can use some of the techniques learned from the competition when teaching my students at York College, to help improve their learning experience.  I would like to thank York College for allowing me the opportunity to work with WorldSkills UK.”

Many congratulations to York College tutors Mike Burdett and Kevin Calpin and their respective WorldSkills gold medallist competitors!
