Event
A-Level and National
Diploma Applied Science
students working towards
their STEM Leaders Award
had the chance to meet
STEM business people
in a speed-dating style
session held in college.
Business people with
STEM (science, technology,
engineering and maths)
backgrounds were invited
to take part, helping
the students to help
bring the curriculum
to life.
Students had 7 minutes
with each business person
to find out as much as
could about their job
role and background.
The information they
acquired was useful for
help with future careers
and gave an ideal grounding
for projects and coursework.
The event, organised
by the North Yorkshire
Business & Education
Partnership (NYBEP),
involved business partners;
University of York (Centre
for Immunology and Infection),
English Heritage, Environment
Agency, FERA, Filpot
Ltd and York NHS Hospital.
Zena Chui, STEM Support
Adviser at NYBEP said
“These speed-dating style
events are an innovative
and fun way of introducing
young people to a massive
variety of business people
and job roles. There
is nothing like real
life experiences and
stories to spark excitement
and interest into subjects.
These sessions are an
effective way of introducing
students to six different
business people in one
hour and hopefully igniting
some interest into following
a STEM career.”
Linda Inglis, Science
tutor at York College
said: “This was a fantastic
opportunity for our students.
They gained an insight
and became familiar with
the work undertaken by
these organisations.
Not only did it provide
them with information
to help them with their
studies but it also helped
them to find out about
career opportunities.
The college is most appreciative
of the companies who
have gave freely of their
time.”College Science
students to help bring
the curriculum to life.
Students Science needed
to find out more about
Health & Safety in
the workplace and also
interview STEM professionals
to gain a STEM Leaders
Award, which is where
the Speed-Dating event
comes into action.
