Record Vocational Results at York College
National Diploma students at York College achieved an amazing 276 Triple Distinctions this year, nearly one hundred more than last year! These results are equivalent to three As at A Level for nearly half of the year group.
A fantastic 33, out of 38 Sports and Exercise Science students achieved this high grade, whilst a massive 49 out of 65 Uniformed Public Services students gained these distinctions.
Many Vocational students are now progressing to university or employment. Sarah Fisher, one of 13 students who achieved a triple distinction in Art and Design says: “I chose the National Diploma course because I was unsure which area of design I wanted to have a career in. This course allowed me to study different areas of art and design to see what I was interested in. I am now able to progress to Huddersfield University to study Interior Design, this course has helped me make this decision.”
India Magson is one of 17 students, out of class of 33, who were awarded triple distinctions on the National Diploma Media Publishing course, and the whole course gained 100% achievement. India is now progressing to study a four year masters degree course in Photography at Sheffield Hallam University.
York College Performing Arts students were also highly successful. On the Acting course 14 out of 20 triple distinctions were achieved, in Musical Theatre 19 out of 28 and in Production Arts three out of eight. Many of these students will further their careers in the performing arts by studying at top universities or drama schools including East 15 and Trinity College, Carmarthen.
Lauren Beadle achieved her triple distinction in Hospitality Supervision, a course with 100% achievement almost all of which were triple distinctions. She says of her time at College: “My College experience was a complete change from school, it allowed me to be more independent and make my own choices. The tutors were very helpful in the decisions I made, offering help and support. I am looking forward to studying Event Management at Leeds Metropolitan University.”
Other areas where students were highly successful in achieving triple distinctions were 3D Design Crafts, Fashion, Graphic Design, Music Technology, Engineering, Science, Construction, Childcare, Travel and Tourism, Sport, IT and Business Studies.
Level 1 and Level 2 vocational programme achievements were very high with 97% of students being successful on their chosen course. These vocational courses provide qualifications and skills which enable students to pursue their aspirations either in the workplace or by studying further qualifications at College. Aaron Camp gained his Level 2 Certificate in Motor Vehicle and Repair, he says: “I chose this course because I always had an interest in Mechanics and I went to a garage on work experience. I am hoping to join the RAF and become a qualified aeroplane technician, if I cannot do this I will come back to College to study fabrication or engineering to enhance my abilities and keep pursuing a career in the RAF.”
College Principal Dr Alison Birkinshaw comments: “I am thrilled that this year’s Vocational results have been the best ever with nearly half of our students achieving triple distinctions, which is absolutely outstanding. The College offers over eighty different Vocational courses which require hard work and dedication from students, and the results speak for themselves. I would like to pay tribute to our staff who work very hard throughout the year to ensure students are successful and must congratulate our students on their really impressive achievements. I would like to wish them every success for the future as they progress to university or employment.” |
