Jodie-Marie wins York College Psychology prize In memory of ex-student, Caroline Stuttle

York College student, Jodie-Marie Toone, has been awarded the Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation Psychology prize. The prize is presented each year in memory of ex-York College student, Caroline Stuttle, who was murdered during her gap year in Australia (April 2002). Caroline’s mother, Marjorie Marks-Stuttle, who set up the charity ‘Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation’ which aims to promote safety awareness for young travellers, presented 18 year old Jodie with a certificate and £50 of book tokens.

Jodie-Marie (an ex- Holy Family RC School pupil) from Carlton plans to study a combined psychology/sociology honours degree at Durham University. Her tutor, Andy Higgs, has been impressed with her aptitude to the subject and performance in the classroom, saying: “The psychology department have great pleasure in nominating Jodie for this award as she has shown herself to be an outstanding student of psychology. She is a very polite and respectful young lady who is extremely hard working. She has a drive and determination that is hugely admirable. Jodie is a credit to York College and is thoroughly deserving of this recognition.”

On hearing that she had been nominated for the award Jodie said: “I was so surprised. When I first started at college I was aware of the Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation psychology prize but never thought that I would be a recipient. I love everything about psychology. The subject focuses on the individual, rather than on society as a whole. Although, I think you do need to understand both. That is why I have chosen to take a combined psychology and sociology degree. It is really interesting to look at all the things in life that we don’t normally think twice about. The subject enables you to dissect and see things from another perspective.”

Marjorie Marks-Stuttle said: “Just like Jodie, my daughter had a love of psychology. I am pleased to be able to present this award on behalf of the foundation, which in some small way will enable Jodie to pursue a degree in the subject.”
