York
College at the final
of the Nestlé
Toque d’Or®
Competition, BBC Good
Food Show
On reaching
the final of the Nestlé
Toque d’Or® competition
six professional cookery
students from
York College
were allocated a day
to run the Nestlé
Toque
d’Or® restaurant at the
BBC Good Summer Food
Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
The Nestlé Toque d’Or®
is the most prestigious
college catering & hospitality
competition, attracting
college entries from
England, Ireland, Scotland
and Wales. Over the last
three months the York
College team were mentored
by Michelin-starred chef,
Chris Horridge. At the
final they took over
the Nestlé Toque d’Or®
restaurant at the BBC
Good Food Show with their
‘Revival’ theme, serving
a menu of mushroom soup,
fish, chips and peas
and chocolate dessert;
reviving traditional
meals with a modern twist.
Said
their tutor Martin Halliday:
“This is the World Cup
of hospitality and catering
competitions for colleges
and it has taken over
the students’ lives for
the last six months.
Running a restaurant
at the BBC Good Food
Show, serving one hundred
covers, is an experience
of a lifetime and the
students rose to challenge,
ensuring that the day
went without a hitch.
They were a credit to
the college and I cannot
put into words how proud
we are of them. Watching
them take total control
and running such a presitigous
restaurant service was
inspiring.”
The York College students
in the Nestlé Toque d’Or®
team are Antony Johnson,
Sam Hood, Chloe Boyes,
Michael Saunders, Amanda
Shackell and Ellen Connor.
The students will attend
a prestigious Oscars
style awards ceremony
at the Dorchester in
London on 16th July,
when the winning college
will be announced.
