Launching the York College iPhone App
York College is the first college in the region to develop its very own iPhone app. The creation of the app means that students, whatever their age, can now interact with, and learn about, the College, its courses and facilities.
Gareth Murphy, Marketing Officer at York College comments: "The York College app was created in order to give prospective students yet another way to learn about the College, its facilities and the courses on offer. We know that our students like to receive information using their phones and we know that iPhones are commonplace around the College. It is without doubt the way forward. The beauty of an iPhone app is that it allows students to have the information they need at their fingertips at all times. As an example, in the case of a year 11 student this might mean that they can see whether the College offers the courses they want to study while they’re in school, or maybe an employee can see if we have a professional course to suit them while they’re at work."
The app lists all of the College courses, using a search facility. Also, College news stories are updated constantly and details of the College open events are listed too. Anyone thinking of coming to York College can get a feel for what goes on in an instant.
Currently the app is primarily aimed at prospective students and the College is already thinking of ways to use it to enhance the students’ learning experience, such as revision aids, work planners and things like that. The College also wants to develop the app to include other types of smartphone such as the Blackberry or Android phones.
‘Smart’-type phones like iPhones will become increasingly common in the years to come and are likely to become the device of choice for people who want to get information quickly and wherever they are, and the College is determined to stay ahead of that technology for the benefit of everyone associated with York College.
