Latin
takes off at York College
York College is adding
AS Level Latin to its
wide range of A Level
subjects in September
2010. At the request
of students the college
has offered GCSE Latin
as an Xtra Curricular
option this year and
have found it to be a
popular choice, with
27 students on the course.
Sandra Rowley, Head
of Division for Languages
at York College, says:
“Having a qualification
in Latin is an asset
to students applying
for university, particularly
for students hoping to
study subjects like Languages,
Law or English. The college
initially offered the
subject as an enrichment
option at GCSE and it
has gone down really
well with our students.
We are very pleased that
they have shown such
an interest in the subject
and this has prompted
the college to offer
Latin at AS Level in
2010.”
Student Amy Proudfoot
said: “I want to go into
medicine and I have enjoyed
Latin because it is very
different from all the
other science subjects
that I study.”
Student Elly Magson
said: “I chose to study
Latin simply for fun.
I have found it really
interesting to see how
it differs from other
languages I learnt at
school.”
Student Maja Morawska
said; “The teacher is
awesome. We are studying
GCSE Latin in a year,
so we are working hard.
It is a fascinating subject
which also helps with
the study of other subjects
such as Law.”
As well as AS Level
Latin, York College will
continue to offer GCSE
Latin as part of its
Xtra-curricular activities
next year. The Xtra-curricular
programme offers a rich
variety of learning experiences
to enrich students’ study
programmes, these include
the Extended Project
Qualification and the
Sirius Group.
