York
College Equality Street
York College celebrated
its cultural diversity,
including Norwegian Day
on Monday 17 May. Students
and staff participated
in a series of activities
including quizzes, calligraphy
and a celebratory meal,
allowing them to discover
more about the diverse
cultures, religions and
backgrounds of all the
people in the college
community. It was an
opportunity to raise
awareness of the cultural
differences that make
York College such a vibrant
learning environment.
Said Julie Kitching,
Diversity Development
Advisor at York College: "The
whole college embraced
the E-quality Street
event with enthusiasm.
The event highlighted
the diversity of the
very inclusive college
community in which students
and staff work and socialise.
For example it was wonderful
for everyone to see eighty
different flags, depicting
the nationalities of
our students, displayed
on a world map. Many
of our international
students were involved
in the organisation of
the day and they enjoyed
interacting with other
students, passing on
information about their
own backgrounds. Most
importantly, it was an
opportunity for the college
to find out from its
students how they would
like to participate in
future equality and diversity
events."
