Engineering a Bunny for the RSPCA
Engineering advanced apprentices who are studying Performing Engineering Operations at York College have designed and built a compost bin in the form of large bunny for the RSPCA in York.
The engineering apprentices, who are employed by Nestle UK, Nestle PTC and Lambert Engineering, were asked to create a friendly, eye catching bunny which would not only act as a leaf composter but also attract visitors to their Landing Lane site.
The bunny composter is part of a programme of environmental work being led by volunteer Head Gardener Julia Smith to make the RSPCA site more environmentally friendly and attractive to visit.
The giant bunny rots down leaves, making a compost to enrich the soil. Enhancing the environment, its friendly face will encourage people to visit the RSPCA headquarters, resulting in more animals being adopted.
Said Angela Hunter, RSPCA Branch Manager: "I would like to thank the engineering apprentices at York College who have done a great job designing and making our compost bunny. The bunny will appeal to our visitors and will be great for composting leaves. It is a very welcome addition to our ongoing efforts to become more environmentally friendly at our site."
Said Lisa Rowntree, Head of Engineering at
York College: “The apprentices have already developed significant engineering skills in the first 6 weeks of their course; so we knew they were ready for something more challenging; to work with a real client, on a real problem, in an engineering team. Both their approach and the quality of the bunny, has been nothing but professional & outstanding.’
