Chocolate
Halloween Sculptures
for Nestlé Charity Auction
As part of a live project
with Nestlé, York College
tutors and students studying
sculpture and stonemasonry
were set the challenge
of carving and creating
Halloween themed sculptures
made out of slabs of chocolate.
The chocolate sculptures
are to be auctioned in
aid of Marie Curie Cancer
Care at the Nestle Halloween
Ball, held at the Royal
York Hotel on 30th October.
Said Art & Design tutor,
Dominic Hopkinson: "Having
the chance to work with
such an unusual sculptural
material has been a challenge.
Stone carvers are more
used to working with harder
material that "pushes"
back at you, is dusty and
requires a lot of effort
to work. The chocolate,
although physically easier
to work, had its own idiosyncracies,
not least the fact that
it smelt delicious. However,
it is remarkable how stable
the material is and how
much detail and effects
it will stand. We all learnt
a lot about the processes
of carving that can easily
be translated into other
more traditional materials."
Frank Bauer, Nestlé
York Factory said: "We
have a strong relationship
with the York College
and it was the obvious
place to go with this
idea for the charity
ball. The Nestlé York
Innovation and Renovation
team supported the students
throughout and have invited
the students to visit
Nestlé to see how our
chocolate is made. We
are enormously grateful
for their efforts and
blown away by the quality
of the sculptures. They
are sure to attract many
bids in the auction on
the night raising significant
amount for Marie Curie,
Nestlé's national charity
of the year. For that
we thank them."
Said Helen Ventress,
Head of Division for
Art & Design at York
College: "The college
is always looking for
interesting live projects
for our students to get
involved in and the resulting
Halloween sculptures
for Nestlé, made up of
a ‘Momento Mori’ and
individual gargoyles,
have proved very worthwhile.
We were delighted to
be given such an exciting
opportunity to link our
students to real work,
real clients and a partnership
with such a prestigious
company"
