Celebrations
for student volunteers
York College celebrated
National Student Volunteering
Week by holding a celebration
for the college’s student
volunteering task force.
York College has an
army of students who
give freely of their
time, volunteering to
help others. In the process
they develop valuable
skills which add to their
learning experience and
enrich their CVs.
Student volunteers at
York College can sign
up for a number of volunteering
activities including
the Student Ambassadors
Scheme, Minster Leos
(the youth section of
Minster Lions ), the
Right to Read scheme
(helping pupils at Woodthorpe
Primary School) and Voluntary
Placements.
York College works closely
with the University of
York, which runs v@yorkcares.
This scheme allows students
to register and credit
their hours to range
of awards. Through v@yorkcares
student can get involved
in local community projects.
Says Debra Fowler, Head
of Entitlement at York
College: “During National
Volunteering Week we
wanted to hold a celebration
to say thank you to our
student volunteers because
they do a fabulous job.
By volunteering and helping
others, students make
a real difference. Also,
volunteering can improve
a student’s future prospects
when applying to university
or entering the world
of employment.”
