Fold

Bernadette O Tool

29 April - 30 May

There is a continuous engagement with the question of spatial relationships based on uncertainties and differences in the work of O’Toole. She describes her process as a simultaneous enactment and interrogation of the spaces we inhabit and construct: a folding across lines to create uncertainty between boundaries, instead of defined boundaries of separation. These uncertainties create the potential for multiple readings: a space where a continuous and reversible dialogue can occur. In her recent series of untitled circular paintings each line obfuscates the other; no line no rectangle complete. Here the act of revealing and concealing is played out in full as glazes are built up and pulled back to reveal fold on fold: and the line simply folds itself underneath. It never begins, or only ever begins again.
