What is a Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy?

Sport Therapy is a healthcare profession aimed at the management of sports and exercise injuries through effective prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.

Sports therapy is an important element of the sport and exercise industry. This course will aim to provide direct progression in sports therapy and related careers, and has been designed to appeal to students from a variety of backgrounds.

This is a two year full time course. Subject to validation after successfully completing the foundation degree you will have to opportunity to progress to degree level studies via a one year ‘top-up’ in Sports Therapy at York College, one of York St John University pathways, or go into the workplace using the qualifications you have gained.

The Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy is highly work related and practical, and will offer further opportunities to gain qualifications and professional practice in sports massage, treatment of injury, gym instruction, first aid and other vocational certification.

Over the two years students will work with the college sports team, in the popular sports therapy clinic, and have national, regional and local opportunities for work related learning such as with local sports teams.

Where the Programme Leads

Career progression is possible directly into soft tissue therapy or related areas. Due to statutory regulation to effectively practice under the title of a sports therapist you would need to complete a level 6 ‘top up’ in sports therapy e.g. BSc Sports Therapy .

Subject to validation from York St John University the natural progression route for students is to ‘top up’ the Fd into a BSc Sports Therapy at York College. Alternatively students can progress into a final year BSc at York St John University in their Sports Science and Injury Management), Sports Science for Performance Conditioning), or Sports Science (Exercise Practitioner) pathways . Other universities offering Sports Therapy, Sports Rehabilitation, Injury Management degrees may accept students onto year two or three depending on grade classification and experience.
