This programme provides a holistic overview of the Social Sciences relevant to the public sector. It gives an introduction to several relevant subjects, which are considered in relation to employment within the public sector.
The content of the programme covers a broad range of topics that provide the learner with knowledge of social sciences relevant to the public sector. The programme is academic in nature but has a strong focus on the development of personal and professional skills, and the application of these in the workplace.
There is a strong emphasis on employability and the application of theoretical concepts to practical situations. Teaching and learning strategies have been designed to further develop key transferable and employability skills based on current practice, to enable you to succeed in the public sector.
The programme is specifically designed to give you the opportunity to investigate your own sector interests and follow your chosen areas of research. Over the course of the two years of the programme you will apply key concepts and constructs that will enable you to access careers in your chosen public sector.
First year modules: Introduction to Sociology, Careers in the Public Sector, Introduction to Political Systems, Social Differences, Divisions and Inequalities, Skills for Working in the Public Sector and Comparative Models of Social Welfare and Political Ideology.
Second year modules: Equality and Diversity, Sociology and the Global Environment, Individual Research Project, Historical Application in the Public Sector, Psychology at Work and The Third Sector.

How the Programme is Delivered
The course is delivered using a wide range of teaching and learning methods including classroom-based lectures, group-work sessions, workshops and tutorials. It will also include distance learning, practical sessions and research and evaluation of the workplace experience.
A number of assessment methods are used including written assignments, research tasks and self-analysis, reflective accounts, practical assessments, oral presentations and case studies.
The Foundation Degree in Applied Social Sciences for the Public Sector provides a flexible programme of study that enables you to identify, acquire and develop transferable skills and knowledge which will enable you to contribute and develop your full potential in the public employment sector. You will be prepared for progression to Level 6 Higher Education.
What can this lead to?
Graduates can choose to enter the workplace or go on to study a top-up year to complete the BA (Hons) in Public Sector Management at York College.
