The Extended BA (Hons) Degree in Applied Social Science and Social Policy is a programme where the first year takes place at York College, with the subsequent three years at the University of York.
The programme offers modules in Study Skills and Information Technology alongside the underpinning knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete the BA in Applied Social Science and Social Policy.
This new extended degree programme has been designed for students without formal qualifications, or for those who are returning to education. The extended degree will enhance your underpinning knowledge and skills before progression on to more specialist studies in the later years of the course.
There are no formal entry requirements, but applicants must show the motivation, commitment and life skills to cope with the requirements of higher education. There will be a tuition fee to pay and in addition there will be the cost of books and materials to consider, although these should be minimal. A minimum attendance of 80 per cent is required throughout the course to successfully progress and achieve.

The modules will be delivered over three days per week during term-time. The foundation year at York College commences in late September and is broken into two semesters of 14 weeks. The programme delivery methods include: tutorials, lectures, practical work, self-study and workshops. Timetables and hours of study will be discussed at the interview.

After successfully completing the foundation year of the extended degree at York College, the following three years will be delivered at the University of York.
Students come to the department having studied a wide range of subjects. The modules (see overview below) studied draw upon a range of social science disciplines - social policy, social psychology, sociology, economics and politics. In addition, throughout the first year students are introduced to the various approaches and practices used in social science.

In years 2 and 3, students have a high degree of flexibility in choosing a range of module options (module overview below) that reflect their particular interests. There is also a compulsory core introductory module to research methods in the second year, which provides essential knowledge and skills for conducting the dissertation in the third year.

The foundation year of the extended degree is assessed mainly by coursework assignments, but occasionally tests may also be used to prepare you for subsequent study at the University of York. Assessment will take place throughout each module as appropriate and will be awarded a 'Pass' or 'Not yet pass'. If 'Not yet pass', you will be given the opportunity to revisit your work.
It is necessary to pass each year successfully in order to progress on to the next year. Successful completion of all four years will result in a BA (Hons) Degree in Applied Social Science or Social Policy.
