Case studies

Chris Hull - Step Up Into Construction Case Study

The Step up into Construction project is funded by the European Structural Investment Fund and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and aims to support unemployed people into construction careers.

Step up into Construction at York College consist of initial Information Advice and Guidance and assessment for all participants followed by contextualised English and Maths sessions and the Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment qualification needed for the site safety CSCS card. The programme also includes practical training in basic construction skills across a number of construction trades, and whenever available construction site visits and work experience with local construction employers. Participants are also supported with job search, applications and interview preparation.

Chris Hull joined the Step up into Construction programme in April 2016. Chris is from York, he has a young family and felt it was time to get his career started. After leaving College before he had completed his full joinery qualification 10 years ago, Chris had been window cleaning for some years. Chris had been unemployed for 5 months before joining the Step up into Construction programme.

Whilst on the programme, Chris learnt basic brickwork skills including; cutting bricks to size with hand tools, brick walling using both English and Flemish bonds, simple joint finishes and constructing simple brickwork structures. Chris also had the chance to refresh his joinery skills; setting out, marking out and manufacturing basic wood working joints and frames.

Whilst on the programme, Chris had the opportunity to take part in a tetrahedron construction activity supported by Amanda Davidson, HR Advisor, and Denise Forster, Systems Co-ordinator, both from Simpson (York) Ltd who kindly came into York College to talk to the Step up into Construction students about the realities of working in the construction sector. This session gave some invaluable advice and guidance on searching effectively for employment in the construction industry, writing a winning curriculum vitae and interview techniques.

Along with the rest of his group, Chris visited Simpson construction site at The Chocolate Works – the former Terry’s Chocolate Factory, where Simpson are redeveloping the landmark heritage Grade 2 Listed Building in to apartments and a care village for Springfield Healthcare. Chris was very interested in the building work and restorations taking place, particularly the repair and restoration of the 180 wooden sash windows in the former offices.

Amanda Davidson, HR Advisor at Simpson was impressed with Chris’s enthusiasm and attitude, so much so that when he had completed the 6-week programme at the end of May 2016, he was offered the opportunity to complete two weeks work experience with the company. Chris completed joinery work experience on site at The Chocolate Works in York and has subsequently been offered a 12 month, full-time, Joinery position, with Simpson (York) Ltd acting as work placement/mentors, as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Re-Making Leeds’ project.

Chris’ next stage of experience was to complete a two day, Re-Making Leeds funded, ‘Repair and Maintenance of Sash Windows’ training programme. This involved learning and developing skills in restoring, renovating and replacing Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian sash windows and took place at Lotherton Hall in Leeds.

Having achieved his Level 2 Award in Heritage Construction, Chris has now moved onto studying for his Level 2 NVQ in Joinery.

Chris says: “This programme gave me the opportunity to re-assess my long term goals and look at ways to restart my career in the construction industry. As well as refreshing my construction craft skills, the programme has introduced me to employers within the industry and I am really pleased to have been supported into a full time opportunity by Simpsons York Ltd.”
