This is an apprenticeship designed as an entry level role into the Accountancy Profession and can lead into a variety of careers with supporting professional qualifications. The role is applicable to a wide range of employers across the sector in both large and small firms and in industry, practice and public sector. This apprenticeship will develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours required for an assistant Accountant. An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominantly either as an Assistant Accountant within practice or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation. Part of their role will involve assisting in the day-to-day financial activities such as data entry and month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements. In addition, the Assistant Accountant may find themselves involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations. York College will work with employers and key players in the sector to prepare and equip you to be successful in your career.
You will develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours (know it, show it & live it) in relation to the areas of specialism associated with the role of Assistant Accountant. A successful apprentice will develop knowledge of business awareness, IT systems and processes, ethical standards, financial accounting and reporting and management of accounting. In addition, apprentices will develop the associated attributes, skills and behaviours, in adhering to high standards of professionalism and quality, expected of an Assistant Accountant.
There is an end-point assessment that has 2 components which have been designed to be completed once the Apprentice has finished the on-programme learner journey. Both components will need to be passed in order for the Apprentice to be awarded the Apprenticeship.
There will be 3 grades for this Apprenticeship: Pass, Fail or Distinction, both assessments will be graded but the weighting will be 40% attributed to the synoptic end-test and 60% to the portfolio and reflective discussion.
Delivery will be in partnership with employers and will adopt a blended approach of on and off the job training and professional development. Apprentices will receive training and mentoring in the workplace and knowledge, skills and behaviour development at York College through classroom based activities.
Candidates must have 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English, although some employers will accept other relevant qualifications and experience, including a relevant Level 2 qualification. Apprentices without English or Maths at Level 2 must achieve this prior to taking the end-point assessment. To start the course you must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. It is strongly recommended that you have completed the Level 2 Accountancy qualification prior to completing this qualification.
It is anticipated that candidates will typically complete the Apprenticeship within 15 to 18 months.
As well as ensuring full competency as an Assistant Accountant, this standard provides the foundation for progression into a number of career paths in the Accounting sector including Audit Trainee, Corporate Recovery Analyst, Credit Controller or Tax Accountant.
