Dressmaking is an exciting and popular craft. This class is for individuals to utilise their interest in dressmaking and to provide a route to further studies. The course is delivered with support and guidance from a qualified tutor who is also a practitioner in the subject. The course will be based in a well-equipped studio with all appropriate provision.
The course covers a range of essential skills and techniques to provide a basic introduction to dressmaking as well as taking skills and interests to a higher level.
Students can explore materials and techniques and learn basic essential techniques and skills. The course provides a basic understanding of safe dressmaking and sewing studio practice. The course can provide the support students need to follow up their own ideas and project.
They will cover how to work from a commercial pattern of their choice (non-stretch fabric and beginner-level pattern) and if necessary adapt to suit their personal needs.
Students will learn relevant skills needed to complete their project. These will include taking body measurements, cutting out and understanding key symbols on the printed pattern, seams and fastenings (including various zips i.e. invisible, dress zip, buttonholes).
They will learn how to use a sewing machine and how to use an overlocker.
A variety of learning methods will be used including tutor presentation, varied demonstrations and one-to-one personalised guidance.
Students may want to focus on a final piece of sewing/dressmaking. Tutors will ensure they follow up a manageable project within the timescale.
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to research ideas and to utilise existing skills.
If students have a sewing machine at home, they should tell their tutor on the first evening; while sewing machines are available for use, it is very helpful for students to use their own domestic machine.
Students may move onto other Awards, Diplomas, Art School courses in the field of Art, Design and Craft. The tutor will be available to advise on progression and opportunities for further study.
