Tuition Fees

If you are aged between 16 and 24, you do not have to pay fees for a Work-based Learning Apprenticeship.

Wages, Tax and National Insurance

If you are aged under 19, you must be paid at least £80 per week as an apprentice; you do not have to be paid the national minimum wage.

As an apprentice aged 19 or over, you do not have to be paid at the national minimum wage for the first year of your apprenticeship. After you have completed the first year, your employer will have to pay you at least the national minimum wage (relevant to your age). The amount you are paid will usually reflect the skills and experience you already have.

As you are employed, you will have to pay tax and national insurance contributions; these are usually automatically deducted from your wages and depend on how much you are paid.

Charitable Support
There are some charities which will support learners following a Work-based Learning programme.

Construction Youth Trust offers some financial support for students in the Construction industry. There are two main forms of support for Further Education:

Toolkits
CYT will purchase toolkits to help support students facing financial barriers to learning and who cannot afford the kit required for a course.

Educational Bursary
CYT offer educational bursaries between £500 and £2000 for students facing financial difficulties. These are highly contested and over-subscribed awards. Early application is advised.

If you feel that you need extra financial support, and are not sure where to start, make an appointment with the Welfare and Funding Advisor. Alternatively, visit the website of "Guidestar" one of the largest charity databases in the country by following this link.
