January 2012: Vocational

Haley Akers (BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT)

Haley has worked incredibly hard to achieve a Distinction grade in Computer Systems, despite being very new to the more technical side of computers. She submitted every assignment ahead of the deadline and had all the work complete to the highest standard by the final deadline. She is the only female student in a class of 18, which some might find a little daunting, while Haley just takes it in her stride. She is always cheerful and enthusiastic and is one of the top performers in the group.

Annie Turney

Debating Society - Clare Kirton (tutor)
Annie works hard, organising the Debating Society- on top of being a thoroughly committed student. She works very hard in terms of academia, as well as putting her heart and soul into extra curricular activities. Annie is polite, pleasant, committed, hard working, nice to all other students, welcoming, inclusive and enthusiastic in debating society. An absolute winner. The debates are student directed and would not happen without the drive and enthusiasm of such students. Annie also runs a facebook page for the Debating Society, she is an absolute credit to York College.

English - Vicky Harrington (tutor)
Annie is a determined, inquisitive and focused student. She shows unfailing good humour and completes all tasks set to the very best of her ability. She's an exceptional young woman.

English/Sirius Group - Bridget Vincent (tutor)
Annie has been a stalwart member of the Sirius Group from the start. She is entirely reliable, committed and enthusiastic in everything she does. If a volunteer is needed, Annie is there, but never in a self aggrandising way, always modest and unassuming. Despite some health setbacks as a result of a sports injury last year, she continued to be cheerful and positive. In short, she is an exemplary student and a delightful young woman.

Science - Sue Lawrence (tutor)
Annie is a highly organised student, always keeping track of what needs to be done in Geography and performing tasks to the highest standards -indeed she should get an A* in Geography. She is also happy to help and advise her fellow students with their work and contributes very effectively to class and group work.

George Fletcher - AS Maths

Disillusioned at school, George left school with no GCSE qualifications and dropped out of education altogether. However, with time to think, he discovered his real thirst for knowledge and learnt that his exceptional intellect and ability would be best channelled into a demanding course of his own choice. Given the offer of a place at College, George proceeded to achieve an A Grade in Maths, despite virtually no teaching, and alongside it an A* in English.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength and has proved himself to be one of the most outstanding members of his year. He scored full, or nearly full marks in all his AS Maths and Physics exams last summer. This year he gained the top score in the Maths Challenge, going on to the second round. In addition, he has just been given a conditional place at Cambridge University to read Maths. This is a remarkable and very well-deserved achievement. George will certainly get into a top university. He is also a delightful student, with a wry sense of humour, who is always prepared to work with and help his fellow students.

Carol McNally - Diploma in Food and Beverage Service Supervision

Carol has worked her way through Level 1 and 2 on the Professional Chef Diploma and Food Service Diploma, and is now undertaking the new Level 3 Food Service Diploma. During the time at College she has worked extremely hard, overcoming several support issues to achieve her qualifications so far. She is always volunteering to help at external events, such as the Mansion House Gourmet Dinners and cross college events, all of which are outside of her planned timetable.

She has taken part in the recent Leonardo placement to Baeza in Spain, coming back with glowing reports from all the tutors involved and from the members of staff in Baeza. Carol has also achieved our departmental Hospitality Food Service Student of the Month for September and November 2011, and acts as a great role model and mentor for lower level students within the group. Her punctuality and attendance are excellent and have been throughout her time in College.

Peter Hook - AS Level Photography, Art

Peter's work, commitment and sustained creativity was demonstrated in his AS Level Art and Design (Photography) coursework. Peter has been a conscientious and committed student who has worked well both independently and with the support of his tutors. His work shows great promise, all the more so as Peter is willing to explore, experiment and take creative risks - all strong qualities in a student of the Arts. This approach has been supported and amplified by Peter's attendance to the Xtra Curriculum Digital Photography programme, with Peter using these sessions to develop his technical skill and understanding, all of which he brings to his AS Level sessions. A strong and capable student, Peter's practice and approach to learning is highly commendable.
(James Rose)

Art and Design - We have all been very impressed by Peter's attitude, creativity and hard work in Photography.
(Kate Swindells)

English Language: Pete is a bright, intelligent and inquisitive student who is keen to improve his work and responds in a mature and focused way to feedback given. He's a joy to teach.
(Vicky Harrington)

Maths: I have no problem with Peter receiving this. He is working well in AS maths.

They were well received and enjoyed the opportunity to speak informally with British students and were excellent ambassadors for the Business area. It was a good opportunity for integration between business courses.
