All the York College entries for York Open Studios 2013 Student Showcase were displayed in the York College Gallery. What an amazing student Evie is. She has gone above and beyond what she should have done whilst with us. I have had many York College students in school, but Evie stands out as an exceptional student. I feel this should be noted and she should get some recognition for it.
Thank you so much for lending her to us, and I know she will make a great success of her next placement, a very lucky setting indeed. Good luck to Evie for the future, and again, many thanks for all her help! I am more than willing to give her a reference should she need it.

February 2013: He/Adult
Mark Bramwell - FdSc Internet and Business Technologies
Mark joined the Foundation Degree in Multimedia Technologies in September 2011 at the age of 48 with no Level 3 qualifications, having left school in 1979 with a reasonable range of CSE qualifications. He had struggled at school and felt a failure especially in terms of his literacy. It was over 30 years before he had a formal diagnosis of severe dyslexia.
Mark worked for many years, even running his own business, but things started to take a turn for the worst in the late 2000’s, losing his best friend and his father within a short space of time. He took on the responsibility of the family business as well as continuing to run the three businesses of his own which in the end became too much, he hit a very low period, suffering from depression and decided to give up the businesses.
After some time away travelling, he began to rebuild his life and took the opportunity to re-train in IT, achieving a good range of Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications, but there were no Level 3 qualifications available to him so he began looking further afield.
Based on his wide range of experience in employment and his recent IT qualifications Mark was offered a place on the Foundation Degree in Multimedia Technologies, subject to completing an informal assessment, which he did to a very high standard.
Mark was finally assessed for dyslexia and declared eligible for learning support; this is yet another barrier to learning which he has successfully overcome. Needless to say he was very apprehensive when he began the course, surrounded by students half his age, most of whom had studied IT/Computing for 2 or 3 years previously.
Mark soon proved himself to be a highly focused, dedicated and hard working student. He is regularly to be found in the College learning centre until 9pm. He has developed an excellent working relationship with his classmates, tutors and his learning support tutor, who also speaks very highly of him. Over the duration of the course he has become more and more independent as his confidence has grown and he is well respected within the class, achieving Distinction grades for almost all of his course work.
Mark is on track to achieve an overall Distinction grade for his Foundation Degree and has been offered a place on Sheffield Hallam’s Top-up Degree course starting in September 2013.

October 2012 HE/Adult: Janet Foster (Access to Business)
When I interviewed Janet at the beginning of September she did not have any confidence in her ability both physically and mentally to do the course. She questioned if she was good enough to do a course at college. However she was very keen to improve her qualifications despite her personal health difficulties.
Although I do not teach Janet I have spoken to her on a weekly basis to see how she is getting on with the course. She says she is really enjoying the course and just from speaking to her I can see a visible marked new confidence in her. Her tutors on the course confirm this and as a result some of her health issues (such as memory loss) seem to have been greatly reduced in such a relatively short period of time. Janet has already raised her own expectations and is wanting to apply to York University to further her studies next year.
Janet is a prime example of how having disabilities is no longer a barrier to reaching goals. College is not only to better your qualifications but also a fantastic opportunity to meet people and be part of a team which greatly enhances social skills and self confidence and personal development. Currently in his second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism, Alex has proved to be an excellent ambassador for the Travel and Tourism department In January he was one of a small group of tourism and hospitality students to take up the opportunity of work experience in Spain. His first year work placement at the Marriott Hotel was equally successful and a part-time job ensued. Additionally Alex has supported the Travel and Tourism team at college open events, promoting his course with enthusiasm. Alex would be the first to admit that he finds his college work difficult and his assignments are a real challenge for him, but he remains upbeat, perseveres with the written assignments and shines in the practical vocational aspects of his course, where he has shown that he has real talent.
Finally, he copes admirably with being the only male member of his group, not always the easiest of situations to be in. He deserves a medal, or at least student of the month!

December 2011: A Level
George Fletcher - AS Maths
Disillusioned at school, George left school with no GCSE qualifications and dropped out of education altogether. However, with time to think, he discovered his real thirst for knowledge and learnt that his exceptional intellect and ability would be best channelled into a demanding course of his own choice. Given the offer of a place at College, George proceeded to achieve an A Grade in Maths, despite virtually no teaching, and alongside it an A* in English.
Since then he has gone from strength to strength and has proved himself to be one of the most outstanding members of his year. He scored full, or nearly full marks in all his AS Maths and Physics exams last summer. This year he gained the top score in the Maths Challenge, going on to the second round. In addition, he has just been given a conditional place at Cambridge University to read Maths. This is a remarkable and very well-deserved achievement.
