April 2011: A Level

A Level: Katie Hodson

English Language - Vicky Harrington
Katie is a delight to teach. Although quiet, she's exceptionally focused and has produced a beautiful coursework folder in English Language which shows style and control, particularly in her creative pieces. Katie's short story showed a flair and subtlety that I would not expect to see in a 16 year old's writing, particularly with a C/D ALPs. Katie's never missed a deadline and communicates well, acting on carefully on feedback giving during 1:1s. A real star.

Business Studies - Liam Godfrey
Katie has shown that she has a good grasp of Business principles. She always completes the work asked of her and this has borne fruit with a B grade in her recent exam.

French - Christine Carneiro
Katie is an exemplary student who is constantly showing progression. Thanks to her serious work, Katie is now able to express opinions and ideas very accurately in her written work. Her range of vocabulary has also considerably increased. Katie always hands in work of an excellent standard. It has been a pleasure to work with Katie.

ICT - Marcus Green
In the January INFO2 exam Katie scored a grade B with 54 marks, two marks off a grade A

Vocational: Daniel Booth
National Diploma Health and Social Care and Extended Project

Daniel has worked incredibly hard this year so far, he is achieving Merits and Distinctions within his course work, in addition Daniel undertook an extended project under his own steam and independently produced an outstanding piece of work for this, in which he achieved an A*

Daniel started on the programme in September 2010, within his first year he contended significant personal barriers, and at times, doubted his own abilities. However, Daniel has overcome all of this in order to achieve some excellent grades. He is a fantastic individual to work with, and despite being the only male within his group, he copes with this incredibly well and is a well respected member of the group. Daniel truly deserves the grades he is getting, and some recognition for the determination and personal progression he has shown.

March 2012: Vocational

Vocational: Joshua Fligg (Diploma in Construction - Level 1)

Joshua had a very poor report from his school regarding his ability and attendance but these negative comments have proved unfounded since he started College. His attendance is currently 93 per cent and we have found him to be a likeable, hard working student who consistently produces good results.

Josh’s attendance has been 100 per cent in Functional Skills. He works hard in every lesson and is always polite and well mannered. Josh has dyslexia, but doesn’t let this hold him back. He is never led by negative behaviour and has recently sat his Entry 3 qualification is Maths and is currently working towards a qualification in English. Josh deserves recognition for his efforts, and this award will motivate him to carry on with his good work and encourage him to take his studies further.

February 2012: Vocational

Alex Standing (Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism)

Currently in his second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism, Alex has proved to be an excellent ambassador for the Travel and Tourism department In January he was one of a small group of tourism and hospitality students to take up the opportunity of work experience in Spain. Alex received outstanding feedback and impressed everyone in Spain with his positive approach, willingness and ‘can do’ attitude.

His first year work placement at the Marriott Hotel was equally successful and a part-time job ensued. Additionally Alex has supported the Travel and Tourism team at college open events, promoting his course with enthusiasm. Alex would be the first to admit that he finds his college work difficult and his assignments are a real challenge for him, but he remains upbeat, perseveres with the written assignments and shines in the practical vocational aspects of his course, where he has shown that he has real talent.

Finally, he copes admirably with being the only male member of his group, not always the easiest of situations to be in. He deserves a medal, or at least student of the month!
(nominated by Carol Spencer)

December 2011: A Level

George Fletcher - AS Maths

Disillusioned at school, George left school with no GCSE qualifications and dropped out of education altogether. However, with time to think, he discovered his real thirst for knowledge and learnt that his exceptional intellect and ability would be best channelled into a demanding course of his own choice. Given the offer of a place at College, George proceeded to achieve an A Grade in Maths, despite virtually no teaching, and alongside it an A* in English.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength and has proved himself to be one of the most outstanding members of his year. He scored full, or nearly full marks in all his AS Maths and Physics exams last summer. This year he gained the top score in the Maths Challenge, going on to the second round. In addition, he has just been given a conditional place at Cambridge University to read Maths. This is a remarkable and very well-deserved achievement. George will certainly get into a top university. He is also a delightful student, with a wry sense of humour, who is always prepared to work with and help his fellow students.

Peter Hook - AS Level Photography, Art

Peter's work, commitment and sustained creativity was demonstrated in his AS Level Art and Design (Photography) coursework. Peter has been a conscientious and committed student who has worked well both independently and with the support of his tutors. His work shows great promise, all the more so as Peter is willing to explore, experiment and take creative risks - all strong qualities in a student of the Arts. This approach has been supported and amplified by Peter's attendance to the Xtra Curriculum Digital Photography programme, with Peter using these sessions to develop his technical skill and understanding, all of which he brings to his AS Level sessions. A strong and capable student, Peter's practice and approach to learning is highly commendable.
