Vocational Programmes

York College offers over 80 Vocational programmes for you to choose from. If you already know what you want to do as a career and have a clear idea of what industry you want to work in then a specialist Vocational programme could be a route to get you to where you want to be. You need to think about:

How many GCSEs you realistically expect to achieve and what grades?
This will determine which level of course is right for you, Level 3, Level 2, Level 1 or Entry Level.

What are your interests?
It may seem obvious but it is really important that you study subjects that you will enjoy and have a real interest in. This does not necessarily have to be a subject that you have studied at school.

How do you learn and work best?
If you prefer to do practical assessments and coursework assignments rather than exams then Vocational programmes may be best for you. However, they are far from an easy option.

Specialist Vocational teaching

Our large team of tutors are highly knowledgeable and experienced in their subjects. Many course tutors have wide industry experience and specialise in the subjects that they teach.

They are very experienced in working with students aged 16 to 19, and dealing with them as young adults. We aim to provide an environment where you can develop independent study and thinking skills, whilst still supporting you when you need it.

Supporting you

We have a dedicated team of support staff which means that you will get support easily and quickly when you arrive at College and throughout your time with us. Tutors and support staff will work closely with you and each other to make sure you get the individual support you need.

You will have regular timetabled sessions with your Progress Tutor to help manage your workload, review your progress and to study the tutorial curriculum. Progress Tutors help you to work through any personal concerns or those related to your course. If you would like to talk to our Learning Support team about additional learning support please phone 01904 770438.

Trips and visits

Students studying Vocational programmes have lots of opportunities for enrichment and enhancement of their studies through subject related visits, trips, work placements and outside speakers.

For example:
Acting/Musical Theatre - Residential trips to London and New York, local theatre visits

Hospitality, Travel and Tourism - Trips to New York, Amsterdam, Manchester airport, Alton Towers, Baeza (in Spain), Italy

Applied Science - Visits to Drax, Nestlé, Blencathra

Public Services - Outdoor navigation and overnight expedition, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, sailing. Trips to Ardeche (South of France) and Morocco.

IT and Computing - London, Alton Towers, proposed trip to India.
