What are you experiences and qualifications before coming to teach at York College?

At the age of 20 I ran my own very successful business in Skipton, North Yorkshire, it was through this that I initially became involved in teaching and curriculum development (for Craven College then Yorkshire Coast College in Scarborough, Beverley College and finally York College).

I have studied at a number of institutions including Huddersfield University; Wakefield College; Yorkshire Coast College; Craven College; Nelson and Colne College and Harrogate College.

What are your qualifications and achievements both personal and professional?

As an ambassador for Vocational education I did not follow the ‘traditional' route at all. My qualifications include a Higher Education Management Diploma, Certificate in Education and a major collection of Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing qualifications.

Why did you choose to teach your subject/course?

Initially I chose to teach because the local Further Education college approached me to rent my business premises for one day a week. As a young teacher still in the industry, I found that bringing the subject alive came easily and was very rewarding.

What are your interests outside of college?

My husband and I have two young daughters who absorb most of our non-work time. We live near the sea and enjoy swimming/walking and generally spending time together.

I am a Director and Management Committee Trustee of my children's out of school club.

What are your dreams and aspirations?

Reaching perfection in everything that I do!

Who are your heroes or inspiration?

I have been and am inspired by many people including a number of our students who overcome significant barriers and personal challenges to achieve great things.

What is the best thing about your job?

Knowing that we are making a difference for all of our students and improving their life chances.

Why do you like working at York College?

York College puts students at the heart of everything it does, is forward looking, determined and focussed on being the best.

What are your experiences and qualifications before coming to teach at York College?

My initial apprenticeship in professional cookery started in Italy before I moved to Germany, France and finally England. I had a three year gap working aboard cruise line ships, holding various position within the kitchens/galleys. Prior to starting teaching at York College I worked in many high class hotels, restaurants and catering outlets. During my career in hospitality I competed in national and international competitions winning several awards.

I started my further education in Italy and completed it in the UK (Kendal College),and then I went on to gain a BSc Honours Degree in Science with the Open University. Prior to starting teaching in the post-16 sector I achieved my PGCE and NVQ 3 and 4 in Training and Development at Manchester Metropolitan University.

What are your qualifications and achievements both personal and professional?

I have represented York College in the Guernsey Channel Islands Salon Culinaire, the Craft Guilds of Chefs Food Service Challenge Salon Culinaire and the Hotelympia Salon Culinaire competitions and won several awards including Gold, Silver and several Bronze medals, as well as three times winner of the Food Safety and Hygiene Trophy.

My creative interests, friends and travels have enriched my love of cooking and although I have more knowledge and practice in the classic French, Italian and modern British cuisine, I am also well-versed in other ethnic cuisines namely Indian, Thai, Chinese and Spanish.

Why did you choose to teach your subject?

I enjoy working with people and I am passionate about food and hospitality services. Professional cookery enables me to draw on my knowledge of both languages and cultures, making my classes a unique and enjoyable experience. Above all, I seek to pass on to my students valuable and pertinent information in a fun atmosphere. This is an experience that leaves them confident and looking forward to work in professional kitchens. Teaching the subject allows me to constantly learn and gain new ideas from students.

What are your interests outside of college?

I enjoy walking/hiking and I am involved with junior football in a variety of roles.

What are your dreams and aspirations?

I enjoy my job and I have a very happy life, I hope to be able to continue this for many years to come.

In my early days of training I was most influenced by Anton Mossman. He was one of the leaders of simple classical cuisine, as well as the Roux brothers.

What is the best thing about your job?

Being able to coach future chefs so they feel free to develop their own methods and follow their own inspiration; the art of cooking will evolve as society evolves only basic rules remain unalterable. Developing our students creativity and initiative is immensely rewarding.

What are your experiences and qualifications before coming to teach at York College?

I studied A Levels in a Tertiary College in my home town of County Durham and then went on to study a HND in Computing at Hertfordshire University (Hatfield Poly), but my heart told me I really wanted to be a teacher in something creative/problem solving! I was awarded a university prize and offered a job with British Aerospace (BA) in their Engineering Structures Department. They had an excellent graduate training scheme and I was lucky enough to follow the Engineering programme so I moved around all the engineering disciplines and loved every second of it, as well as writing software and delivery IT training on the side!

After three years with BA, having experienced design engineering and training I knew it was time to re-train as a Design Technology teacher much to everyone's shock and horror! I trained for two years and absolutely loved every second of the course - from the workshops to the classroom … and loved teaching! there is something really special and invaluable about teaching and supporting our country's young designers and engineers!

Why did you choose to teach your subject?

It uses and develops almost every skill you can think of; researching, designing, analysing, evaluating, problem solving, time management, team working, hand skills, numeracy and literacy, scientific application, etc. and it's forever changing and always a challenge and such a reward when it all comes together.

What are your interests outside of college?

Outside of college I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, but I love singing, acting, cycling, swimming, cooking, movies, reading, and I'm always making something or doing DIY!

What are your dreams and aspirations?

To raise a positive profile of engineering and manufacturing with young people and society, to get engineering and manufacturing back on track in the UK and develop young people who will have the skills and confidence to solve the engineering problems of the future.

Who are your heroes or Inspiration?

My parents … and anyone who lives their life for the benefit of others - whatever they do.

What is the best thing about your job?

Helping someone to believe in themselves and succeed.

Why do you like working at York College?

It's a community, almost a family, with student support and success at the heart of it.

Andy Leach. 14-19 Head of Studies: Vocational

What are your experiences and qualifications before coming to teach at York College?

I was a semi-professional footballer for ten years. Following this I taught in secondary schools in Kent, Leeds, Huddersfield and North Yorkshire for 22 years as a teacher, Head of Department, Head of Year, Head of Vocational Programmes, Director of Sixth Form, Deputy Headteacher and Acting Headteacher.

Why did you choose to come and teach at a post-16 college?

I loved working with 11-18 year old students but wanted to move away from the school environment as I felt restricted in the way I worked with young people. I wanted to work in a more adult environment, to work with older students on a wider range of courses and hopefully develop my own abilities and skills whilst enthusing and motivating staff and students to be successful in everything they do.

What are your qualifications and achievements both personal and professional?

Youth Worker and Sports coaching qualifications, Bachelor of Education Honours Degree in Social Sciences and PE Master of Education Degree.

Why did you choose to teach your subject/course?

I was brought up in a background where members of my family were in education, politics, social work and sport so I think it was a natural progression for me to end up ultimately working and helping others, whether in an education or non-education environment.

What is the best thing about your job?

Working with great young people every day and brilliant staff. Seeing people move onto successful jobs or onto university.

What are your experiences and qualifications before coming to teach at York College?

I was a practising hairdresser in a very busy York city centre salon alongside raising two small children. I joined York College in 1984 on the previous York College site. What are your qualifications and achievements both personal and professional?

City and Guilds Level 2 and 3 Hairdressing
VTCT Body Massage, Waxing and Cosmetic - make up.
Certificate in Education
Assessor Awards

I have two grown up children who I am very proud of and they both studied here at York College, one in Sport and one in 3D Design. I have always managed to juggle both work and home life reasonably well.

Why did you choose to teach your subject?

Because it is and has always been my passion and I have a flair for it. I love working with people and get a sense of excitement when I see the final results in both the product and the customer.

What are your interests outside college?

My family, my grandson and my friends. I love playing sport such as netball, golf and swimming. I also enjoy dancing and soul music.

What are your dreams and aspirations?

Working with students who have a passion for hair and beauty as well as working with the rest of the College staff who contribute to the success of our students.

Kevin Clancy. Head of Division: Construction

What are your experiences and qualifications before coming to teach at York College?

Prior to coming into teaching, I worked as a site manager in the construction industry. On leaving school at 16 I followed a traditional apprenticeship route and continued with my further education whilst working on construction sites in and around Yorkshire.

I enjoyed my further education experience and subsequently did some part-time teaching often going from a building site straight to teaching evening classes. I loved my time at college even though a lot of it was in the evenings and I wanted to help other people realise their full potential through the opportunities provided by further education.

What are your qualifications and achievements both personal and professional?

A strong craft background supports my technical and professional qualifications and among the City and Guild qualifications I hold my craft and advanced craft City and Guilds in Carpentry and Joinery and Wood Machining. Craft qualifications are not the end for either a site manager or a teacher in Construction and I hold an HNC and a BSc (Hons) and have Chartered status.

Why did you choose to teach your subject/course?

I love Construction and the opportunities it provides for people regardless of their schooling or academic background. Once in Construction you never really leave it, there is always a job to be done, a drawing to finish or advice to be given, so it really is one continuous professional development. You don't stop being a joiner or a bricklayer or a Quantity Surveyor or an Estimator just because you become a teacher, you carry on and that is the uniqueness of being a teacher in construction.

What are your interests outside college?

I run (slowly now) and have done for many years, it's a great way to unwind, I like to swim with my daughter and I ride my motorcycle very carefully.

What are your dreams and aspirations?

This is easy to answer; my dream is that there will be fair access to further and higher education and that people will have the same educational opportunities that my generation had. My professional aspirations are to make a difference to the lives of the people who study at the college and to help them achieve their full potential. Personally I aspire to being a good father and husband.

Who are your heroes/inspiration?

I am inspired by people who overcome real hardship and those with different needs who then go on to thrive and succeed at college and I admire the unsung heroes like the carers, volunteers and the helpers in our society, they give of their time selflessly often unrewarded.

What is the best thing about your job?

The best thing about this job is being able to work with students, to teach them and to learn from them. It is a privilege to do this job and I reckon I am pretty lucky to be able to do these things in a fantastic and outstanding college.
