"I
came to York
College after
taking my
GCSEs at
The Mount
School. I
knew I had
an interest
in construction
and I had
enjoyed a
two week
work placement,
working with
a plumber.
I was unsure
about which
area of construction
I wanted
to take further,
so I chose
to study
the National
Diploma in
Construction
because it
gave me a
good overview
of all the
professional
and technical
careers available
within the
industry.
It
was scary
coming from
an all girls
school and
then joining
a male dominated
course at
college.
However,
it wasn’t
a problem
because my
tutors were
so supportive
and they
helped me
to adjust.
I enjoyed
the building
surveying
lessons more
than anything,
plus I managed
to organise
working on
a live project
outside of
college.
I realised
that I would
like to be
a building
surveyor
and have
since progressed
to study
a building
surveying
degree at
Leeds Metropolitan
University.
York
College helped
me to find
my way. I
found a passion
for construction
and I feel
confident
about going
in to the
industry
in the future."
