Sirius
Group
The Sirius
group is unique
to York College
Sixth Form,
set up especially
for students
considering
applying for
prestigious
courses, such
as medicine
or law, or
universities,
such as Oxford,
Cambridge or
other Russell
Group institutions.
Its aims are:
- To develop
a broader
background
for students,
e.g. through
introducing
them to a
range of
cultural
opportunities
and philosophical
concepts.
- To develop
more confident
presentational
skills, in
formal and
informal
contexts.
- To help
students
become better
at thinking
on their
feet, e.g.
through debate
and discussion.
- To create
a stimulating
and challenging
intellectual
peer group.
This is not
simply about
preparing students
directly for
the selection
processes employed
by top level
universities
and courses.
It is intended
to develop
students’ higher
level skills
in a way that
makes them
genuinely better
candidates
for their chosen
courses, and
to develop
an intellectual
breadth through
a broad range
of activities.
The
Extended Project
The Extended
Project allows
young people
to pursue an
area of special
interest and
take their
studies to
a higher level.
It prepares
them for the
kind of independent
learning expected
in higher education.
Candidates
need to be
self-motivated
and well organised.
The project
can be individual
or group work,
and can be
an artefact,
a dissertation,
an investigation
or a performance.
The Extended
Project is
a stand-alone
option for
anyone, including
A Level students,
and supports
progression
to higher education.
It is worth
half an
A Level and
carries up
to 60 UCAS
points.
Every single
one of the
students who
took the Extended
Project were
awarded grades
A* to B for
their dissertation,
another 100%
achievement
for York College
Sixth Form.
“Working on
the Extended
Project has
been an overwhelmingly
positive experience.
Being given
the chance
to study a
topic that
fascinates
you in such
depth is brilliant.
I chose to
study Gothic
iconography
in the novels
of Thomas Hardy.”
