Studying a Foundation Degree in Media Make-up, Special Effects Make-up and Hair Design is the ideal course for student Ruby Mitchell who is fast becoming an Instagram sensation with 75,000 followers, photos of her work in the national press and offers of work from home and abroad.
Ruby, formerly of King James School in Knaresborough, has a flair for gore and all things horror. Her scary designs are in great demand, especially around Halloween, and her YouTube videos showing special effect makeovers, with all kinds of frightening designs and illusions, further promote her online presence.
At school Ruby enjoyed arty subjects and growing up her favourite thing was experimenting with make-up at home. She says: “It was great when I came to an Open Event at the College and saw this course, I just knew it was absolutely right for me. I began with a Level 2 Hair & Media Make-up course, then a Level 3 in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair & Make-up which enabled me to progress to the Foundation Degree in Media Makeup, Special Effects Make-up and Hair Design. Even though my work is centred around the macabre, the degree course has helped me with realism, such as understanding the difference between first and second degree burns. I like body painting too, and having a qualification in hairdressing helps me to create an overall look. In the future I see myself as a make-up artist working in horror, in films, television, theatre or promotions.”
Ruby, aged 19, is inspired by horror movies and other artists, as well as her tutors and fellow students who share their ideas and work out ways for them to come to life. She has regular freelance work outside of her College course and Halloween is her busiest period. Much of the work is generated from her many Instagram posts and recently she has been offered make-up jobs in the US, to work on short films next year.
