How we work with you:
Apprenticeships are work-based learning programmes which incorporate several different qualifications, including an NVQ, into an overall framework.
Our assessors will come to your workplace, at a time negotiated with you to ensure minimal disruption to your business, and your employee will attend college part-time to learn the theory underpinning their job. As an employer, you will receive regular updates on how your member of staff is progressing on their programme. Your employee will learn while working to build his or her knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and experience. Apart from the NVQ, he or she may also complete a technical certificate and Key Skills qualifications.
There are different levels of Apprenticeship available but they all lead to nationally recognised qualifications tailored to meet industry standards. Apprenticeships can now be taken at any age from 16+, meaning that they are available to all employees.
What are the entry requirements?
You must have a job that matches your chosen Apprenticeship, and the enthusiasm and commitment to undertake learning while working full-time. Applicants must be employed for at least 30 hours per week (this can include time spent at college undertaking training) and live in England they should not have a degree or be taking part in any other substantial government-funded programme.
All applicants must attend, and be successful at an interview and guidance session with York College. Applicants for Children’s Care must provide references. Applicants for Plumbing, Electrical Installation and Construction Crafts must complete an aptitude test, and there may from time to time be similar tests for other subjects. Your employer must pass a York College workplace inspection to check that they meet Health and Safety requirements.

Small Employer Incentive
On 16th November 2011, the government announced a new incentive to encourage thousands of small firms that don’t currently employ apprentices to take on a young apprentice aged 16 to 24. This will support up to 40,000 new Apprenticeships.
The incentive is for employers with up to 50 (and in some cases up to 250) employees and comprises a payment of £1,500 payable in two stages. It will be available to small firms in all industries and for Apprenticeships at all levels from April 2012.
Details of how the new incentive will be administered and when employers will be able to express formal interest in it are currently being developed and will be announced as soon as possible. Updates on this development will appear on the Governments Apprenticeship Service Website www.apprenticeships.org.uk
The incentive is part of a wider £1 billion package of support to encourage small businesses to employ young people.
Employer subsidy to employ a jobless young person
From April 2012, an incentive of £2,275 will be available for small employers who employ a jobless 18-24 year old for a period of six months. The subsidy will support work and training placements.
The government aims to subsidise work placements and training for up to 160,000 young jobless over a three year period.
Details of this subsidy are currently being developed and updates will appear in due course.
