Foundation Degree (FdA) in Business Management
Subject to validation by York St John University
UCAS Code: NN12 (FdA/BM)
Duration and Attendance
The course lasts for two academic years (full or part-time).
Part-time students are required to attend one afternoon and evening per week or two evenings per week.
What is a Foundation Degree in Business Management?
A foundation degree is a stand-alone programme equivalent to the first two years of a traditional degree. It differs from a traditional degree in that it combines the academic world with the work-related practical side of the business world. Many students who complete the FdA progress onto the Top- up degree and graduate with a BA (Hons) which takes an additional year for full-time students and one and a half years for part-time.
The Foundation Degree in Business Management is designed to ensure that the student develops an in-depth knowledge of how business works alongside the managerial skills required to progress to a senior role. The course is suited to those new to the sector and those with more experience who are interested in progressing in their career.
Why do a Foundation Degree rather than a traditional degree?
One of the biggest criticisms of honours graduates by employers is that while they may be academically knowledgeable, they may not always be able to apply that knowledge or understand the practical nature of the workplace.
The Foundation Degree by nature integrates workplace practice with the academic skills to operate at a high level. It therefore makes its graduates more work-ready. For part-time learners it allows them to integrate and improve their current work practices both at an individual and organisation level.
In the Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) Top-up model of two years plus one year (for full-time students) or two years plus two years (for part-time students) learners can step-off and back on to their learning programme with a recognised qualification at the end of each stage.
Traditionally a part-time honours degree would take five years (with no step off qualification of true value) but under the York College model this can be reached in four years.
