NVQ Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities Level 2/3/4

National Vocational Qualifications are work-based qualifications which assess competency in your job and this qualification is only available to those who are working in a laboratory based environment. Please note that this qualification has two pathways; Industrial and Educational.
What You'll Need
Level 2
Normally students gaining entry to this course will hold as a minimum: either 3 GCSE D grades; or equivalent levels of qualifications including GNVQ Foundation, NVQ 1, other level 1 equivalent qualifications eg. ASDAN, NOCN, GNVQ Part 1 (Foundation).Students who do not have the normal entry qualifications can gain entry to this course if they have appropriate experience or a mixture of work experience and qualifications.All applicants should be able to demonstrate some progress in Maths and English.
Level 3
Normally students gaining entry to this course will hold as a minimum: either 4 GCSE grades at C or above; or equivalent levels of qualifications including GNVQ Intermediate, First Diploma / Certificate; NVQ 2, other Level 2 equivalent qualifications eg. ASDAN, NOCN, GNVQ Part 1 (Intermediate). Students who do not have the normal entry qualifications can gain entry to this course if they have appropriate experience or a mixture of work experience and qualifications.All applicants should be able to demonstrate some progress in Maths and English.
Level 4
This is available depending on opportunities in the workplace. Please contact the college for details.
Duration and Attendance
Normally two years' flexible study for each level.
What You'll Do
Level 2 - the total number of units required for this qualification is six.
Industrial Pathway There are 3 mandatory units: Complying with statuary regulations and organisational safety requirements Developing and maintaining working relationships Using laboratory information systems.
In addition 3 optional units (2 must be from Group A)
Optional Group A Carry out simple testing operations Carry out simple sampling operations Prepare laboratory materials, equipment and resources
Optional Group B Calibrate equipment Control stocks of laboratory materials and equipment Working in aseptic or clean room conditions
Educational Pathway There are 3 mandatory units: Complying with statuary regulations and organisational safety requirements Developing and maintaining working relationships Using laboratory information systems.
In addition 3 optional units (2 must be from Group A): Optional Group A Prepare laboratories for learning activities Maintain laboratory and associated resources Process requests to support learning
Optional Group B Contribute to the support of student activities Trial laboratory methods for use in learning activities Calibrate equipment Control stocks of laboratory materials and equipment
Level 3 - the total number of units required for this qualification is eight.
Industrial Pathway There are 5 mandatory units: Maintain a healthy, safe and productive work environment Create effective working relationships Carry out testing operations Assess data and produce reports Provide technical support
In addition 3 optional units (2 units must be from Group A):
Optional Group A Plan delivery of sampling and testing Carry out complex testing operations Carry out complex sampling operations Carry out investigations Carry out small scale processing Identify and monitor calibration requirements for equipment Developing the research design
Optional Group B Control stocks of laboratory materials and equipment Work in aseptic or clean room conditions Make Presentations Manage yourself Enable learning through demonstrations and instruction Contribute to the development of teams and individuals Lead the work of teams and individuals to achieve their objectives
Educational Pathway There are 5 mandatory units: Maintain a healthy, safe and productive work environment Create effective working relationships Provide technical support Improve the quality and reliability of the laboratory Contribute to the support of student activities
In addition 3 optional units (2 units must be from Group A): Optional Group A Diagnose faults, repair and maintain laboratory equipment Develop and trial new laboratory methods Contribute to the planning of teaching and learning Demonstrate laboratory methods to facilitate learning Control stocks of laboratory materials and equipment
Optional Group B Assist colleagues in particular laboratory techniques Carry out investigations Make presentations Manage yourself Contribute to the development of teams and individuals Lead the work of teams and individuals to achieve their objectives Developing the research design.
Exams and Assessments
Assessment is done by building a portfolio of evidence in discussion with an advisor. The portfolio is assessed and supplemented by assessing competence of performance in the workplace. The assessors we have at York College include experienced staff from educational and industrial environments.
How You Can Progress
On completion of the course what do most students move on to?
Level 2 students could possibly progress to Level 3, provided they have the appropriate opportunities within the workplace.
