Every year we seek to celebrate the success of our Higher Education students at a graduation ceremony held in central York. This year the ceremony is to be held at York Minster on Thursday 13th September.

This event promises to be a memorable and special occasion for our graduating students and their families.

Schedule of the Day

15.00pm – 18.00pm: Gowns will be available for collection and photography will be available from The Hospitium, York.
18.00pm – Photographs at the Minster
18.00pm – Guests can begin to be seated in the Minster
18.30pm – Grandaunts to be seated in the Minster
19.00pm – Graduation Ceremony to begin
20.30pm – Ceremony finishes and gowns to be returned to The Hospitium
21.00pm – Gown return is closed

By now eligible students should have received their graduation emails with details of how to book their places but we hope the FAQs below will answer any questions you might still have. If you still need to speak to us, call the marketing team’s events officer on 01904 770223.

Do I have to book a place beforehand?

Yes. Absolutely! Places are limited and various regulations mean we have to strictly control the number of attendees and know exactly who is coming on the day. Also, the ceremony is highly choreographed, this year students are asked to arrive at the Hospitium before moving to York Minster; all of this has to be arranged in detail prior to the day and if we’re not expecting you we can’t arrange for you to be a part of the ceremony.

What if I book then find I can’t come?

Don’t worry, just let us know you’ll not be coming and we’ll alter the running order, we’d much rather know in advance if you have to cancel.

Do I have to attend?

No. The graduation ceremony is not compulsory and not attending won’t affect your qualification. You don’t have to let us know you’re not coming either, if you don’t want to come just don’t return your form and we’ll not expect you.

How much does graduation cost?

While we don’t charge for the ceremony itself, there is a charge for gown hire. Please visit gown hire specialists Ede and Ravenscroft's website for prices, ordering will be going live on Tuesday 1st May. Proceeds from the gown hire do not go to the College.

Do I have to wear a gown?

Yes. The ceremony is a formal occasion and you are required to wear the academic dress of the College; you will not be able to graduate without a gown.

How many guests can I bring?

Each graduand may bring two guests to the Hospitium, however, there is no limit on the number of guests you can bring to the ceremony at York Minster. For any special circumstances where you require extra tickets for the Hospitium, please contact Connie Parkinson on 01904 770223; extra tickets will be provided when we have an idea on final numbers in August.
