Frequently
Asked Questions (Customer
Services)
Q.
Do I need to have
studied the subject
I am interested
in before?
A.
This depends on which
level you wish to
study. For basic
level courses you
do not require any
previous study. For
higher level courses
e.g. A level / HNC
etc it may be advisable
to study at a lower
level prior to undertaking
certain courses.
Professional courses
have certain requirements
which are set out
by the professional
bodies, which the
college has to adhere
to e.g. Chartered
Institute of Marketing,
Institute of Personnel
and Development,
and Institute of
Management. For further
information contact
the Customer Services
Unit.
Q.
Do I need to have
GCSE's/A levels
to study at college?
A.
Not necessarily.
Again this depends
on the level of the
course. Higher level
courses will specify
particular entry
requirements. There
are also separate
circumstances for
some learners whereby
experience in other
areas and commitment
to learning may be
taken into account.
Learners wanting
to study at a higher
level who do not
have the relevant
qualifications might
like to consider
an Access to Higher
Education course.
In most cases universities
will accept this
qualification to
gain entry to their
courses. These courses
can be studied full-time
over one year. Contact
the Customer Services
Unit for more information.
Q.
Am I too old to
come to college?
A.
There is no upper
age limit for most
courses. We usually
require learners
to be over the age
of sixteen, but in
some cases younger
learners may be considered
with the permission
of their school.
Q.
I don't really
know what type
of course I want
to do, .... is
there anyone I
can discuss this
with?
A.
Our Customer Services
team are available
to offer advice on
a wide range of courses.
You may also wish
to arrange a careers
interview through
our Student Services
department. Telephone
01904 770397 to make
an appointment.
Q.
Are there any child
care facilities
available in the
evening?
A.
The college does
have a day nursery,
but unfortunately
there are no evening
child care facilities
available at the
moment.
Q.
Is there any financial
help available
towards extra costs
associated with
course materials?
A.
Learners suffering
financial hardship
are able to apply
to the college's
Learner Support fund
for help with essential
course related costs
such as equipment,
uniform, books, travel,
educational trips.
Learners can get
an application form
from the Student
Services Department
in the college or
by calling: 01904
770397. Applications
are assessed according
to a set of criteria
based on financial
circumstances and
actual need.
Q.
I can't make it
for that time due
to other commitments
is it OK if I'm
10/15 minutes late
in arriving?
A.
This is not usually
a major problem in
most cases, however
if this is to be
a regular arrangement,
prior approval from
the tutor will be
required.
Q.
Will I be in a
group full of 16-18
year olds, or will
there be older
learners on my
course?
A.
With evening classes
there is usually
quite a mixture of
age groups on most
courses.
Q.
Can I get any help
towards course
fees?
A.
If you are in receipt
of certain benefits,
then you may be entitled
to a full or part
concession on course
fees. The Customer
Services team and
Student Services
will be able to advise
you in greater detail
with relevance to
your particular circumstances.
Call 01904 770400 & 770397.
Q.
If I don't meet
the course entry
requirements and
I don't have the
specified qualifications,
can I still apply
for the course?
A.
Most courses will
consider applications
from learners who
do not meet the specified
entry requirements.
Alternatively for
those learners failing
to meet the entry
requirements, a more
appropriate course
of study in your
chosen area of interest
may also be suggested.
Q.
I haven't been
to school/college
for 30 years. Is
there any help
available with
regard to study
skills?
A.
The college offers
courses to meet a
range of abilities,
including courses
about returning to
study and confidence
building courses.
Q.
If I find that the
course is not for
me can I withdraw?
A.
You are, of course,
free to withdraw
from the course at
any time but the
college does operate
a no refund policy.
The best advice is
to make enquiries
prior to enrolling.
Our team of advisors
will be happy to
answer your questions.
Q.
Can I join a class
after it has already
started?
A.
This will depend
on the percentage
of attendance required
for the course. For
an 80% attendance
course, it may be
possible to start
late, but for a 100%
attendance course
this would not be
possible unless there
are circumstances
under which the individual
tutor sees fit.
