How to Prepare for your Interview

Information for Students

An Apprentice is an employee who is following a learning programme alongside their job. As an Apprentice you’ll build up your knowledge and skills at work and gain qualifications with the college – earning money and learning at the same time.

An Apprenticeship is a package of several qualifications that together add up to either a Level 2 Apprenticeship or a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. All Apprenticeships involve National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and Key Skills qualifications in Communication and Application of Number. Most also involve a Technical Certificate such as a BTEC or City & Guilds, and some include additional qualifications such as extra Key Skills and other certificates. You’ll receive certificates for the individual qualifications as you achieve them, and an overall Apprenticeship certificate once you’ve completed the whole programme.

What are the entry requirements?

You must have a job that matches your chosen Apprenticeship, and the enthusiasm and commitment to undertake learning while working full-time. Applicants must be employed for at least 30 hours per week (this can include time spent at College undertaking training) and live in England; they should not have a degree or be taking part in any other substantial government-funded programme.

All apprenticeship programmes demand certain GCSE (or equivalent) passes. Please see individual course guides for further specific information.

All applicants must attend and be successful at an interview and guidance session with York College. Applicants for Plumbing, Electrical Installation and Construction Crafts will have to complete an aptitude test, and there may from time to time be similar tests for other subjects. Your employer must pass a York College workplace inspection to check that they meet Health and Safety requirements.
