Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D including Maths and English Language (grade 3+).

Duration

One year.

What will I study?

The programme is designed to provide you with an understanding of the basic aspects of health and social care and the factors affecting an individual's health and well-being.

Units include:

  • Impact of Diet and Health
  • Ensuring Safe Environments
  • Individual Needs
  • Individual Rights
  • Health and Social Care Services
  • Communication
  • Emergency Care

Also included are visits, guest speakers, career preparation events and a compulsory work placement.

Maths/English GCSE retakes are required if not already achieved at grade C, or the study of Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills courses. This allows progression to a Level 3 course. GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above are required for university or employment.

How will I be assessed?

All units are assessed by assignments, all of which must be completed in order to pass the course.

What could it lead to?

On successful completion of the main qualification at Merit grade, and with the appropriate qualifications in English and Maths, you can progress to a Level 3 course in Health and Social Care, Child Studies or Public Services. Alternatively, you might move directly to employment and continue training through NVQ work schemes. Jobs open to you include health care assistant in a hospital or care setting, working with the elderly, individuals with disabilities or with children.
